Research on machine stress grading in South Africa.

, : Research on machine stress grading in South Africa.. CSIR Symposia No S 61: 23 ; 19 ; 19

Reviews work on the derivation of regressions and working stresses for S.African timber of Pinus spp., discusses the basic requirements for a stress-grading machine and the effect of dimensional variation, and proposes a standard set of nine stress grades (in a geometric progression) for use in southern Africa. Describes the operating principles of a new stress-grader developed by the Timber Research Unit, and the reasons for adopting a different approach to that used in other countries.
