A note on rate of eating in sheep

, : A note on rate of eating in sheep. Animal Production 15(2): 211-214

In the first of 2 experiments 18 Scottish Halfbred ewes were used. Feed intakes during given time intervals after offering fresh feed were recorded. Sheep fed on ground, pelleted dried grass ate significantly faster in the first 30 min after feed was given than those given long hay. Chopped dried grass was eaten at an intermediate rate. Rate of eating of the long hay or chopped dried grass was positively related to total intake and negatively related to retention time in gut.
