Abnormal neurologic signs in the first year of life in low-birthweight infants: possible prognostic significance

, : Abnormal neurologic signs in the first year of life in low-birthweight infants: possible prognostic significance. Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology 14(5): 575-584

A prospective study of 300 children whose birthweights were 2000 g or less attempted to identify in the first year of life those who might have minor impairments at school age. A syndrome of transient abnormal neurological signs ('transient dystonia') is described. The incidence of transient dystonia increased with decreasing birthweight and was increased in males with birthweights of 1500 g or less and in small-for-dates infants.
