Abnormal rays in stained heartwood of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco

, : Abnormal rays in stained heartwood of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. Journal of the Institute of Wood Science 5(5): 28-30

Microscopic examination of sections of heartwood from a length of P. menziesii sawn timber containing an unusual stained region showed that the reddish-brown stain was attributable to abnormal rays. The stained region was oriented radially and the wood was characterized by rays that were larger, occupied a much higher proportion of the wood and contained considerably more deposits than the rays of normal wood.
