Livers of male obese (ob/ob) mice and lean control C57Y BL/6J mice fed to appetite on laboratory chow were perfused as before (NAR 44, 3960). The addition of lactate to the perfusate increased net glucose production by gluconeogenesis similarly in livers of both groups of mice; in fed animals rates of gluconeogenesis were the same in lean and obese mice when labelled glucose production from labelled pyruvate was measured.
