Fruits of the varieties Cerutti, which normally sheds its fruit, and Arauco, which does not, were observed thoughout their formation and growth. Arauco differed most obviously from Cerutti in having a longer phase III (second period of rapid growth and maturity), a delay of 20 days in the appearance of the ripe colour and no phase IV (senescence), so that the fruit continued increasing its fresh weight. The fruit of Arauco remained turgid and on the tree until the new buds appeared.
