Abscission processes in cotton: induction by plant water deficit

, : Abscission processes in cotton: induction by plant water deficit. Agronomy Journal 65(2): 202-204

In glasshouse experiments, boll and leaf abscission in cotton plants increased linearly as leaf water potential decreased gradually from -20 to -24 bar. Young bolls and old leaves abscissed first and most fruit was shed during the 3 days following re-watering. About -10 bar leaf water potential before dawn was required to induce significant leaf abscission, which was quite rapid 1 day after the relief of water stress.
