The rumen of sheep was infused with 14CO2, 4 mu Ci, or NaH14CO3, 3 mu Ci. In another test, sections of the rumen wall were incubated with the 2 compounds. Samples of blood and rumen contents were taken and their radioactivity was counted. 14CO2 was absorbed into the blood stream and some of the carbon was utilised in synthesis in the rumen wall. Much of the absorbed radioactivity was in red blood cells and up to 94.3% of radioactivity in rumen contents was associated with bacterial fraction.
