2 Na fractions, one in the symplasm and the other in the vacuole, were characterized in the roots of oat and safflower plants grown in modified Hoagland solution and the mobility of each fraction was studied using 22Na. In oat plants, the most labile Na fraction comprised about 9% of the total root Na and was easily exchanged with both Na and K ions from fresh nutrient solution at about 1.7 mu eq/plant h. The remaining fraction was only exchangeable with Na ions at about 1.2 mu eq/plant h.
