Absorption of antibodies through the intestines of newborn pigs

, : Absorption of antibodies through the intestines of newborn pigs. Dissertation Abstracts International 33B(7): 3378

Sows actively immunized with avian ovalbumin produced antibodies in the colostrum. In piglets receiving colostrum the antibodies were absorbed by specific cells in the intestines, identified as enterochromafin cells. The cells had protoplasmic processes extending up to the intestinal lumen and they travelled from the mucosal epithelium to the submucosa and intestinal lymphoid tissues. Cells were also detected in mesenteric lymph nodes and a few in the spleen.
