Absorption of carbohydrates in malnourished rats

, : Absorption of carbohydrates in malnourished rats. Journal of Nutrition 102(10): 1303-1310

The effects of protein and protein-calorie malnutrition on the absorption of different carbohydrates were studied in rats, by perfusion of intestinal segments in vivo with polyethylene glycol as a marker. Three types of diets were given for 1 to 4 weeks to male Wistar rats of bodyweight 80 g: CTL, consisting of protein 18, carbohydrates 70 and fat 8%; LPR, the same as CTL but with only 4% protein; and LPC, low protein (4%) and low carbohydrate (45%).
