Absorption of carboxylic acids by the caecal wall in the rabbit

, : Absorption of carboxylic acids by the caecal wall in the rabbit. Annales de Biologie Animale, Biochimie, Biophysique 13(3): 453-464

Some rabbits were fed for 2 months on oats, lucerne, carrots and water. Carboxylic acids were isolated from samples from the digestive tract, its wall and plasma, taken from anaesthetised animals. In the contents of the caecum, the most abundant of the 15 acids studied were acetic, butyric and succinic acids. In the mucosa, the relative proportions differed; there was a much higher proportion of lactic acid, and malonic acid was absent.
