Sprague-Dawley rats weighing initially 128 g on a stock diet which contained 18% protein and 18 mg Fe/100 g diet were given daily by tube 39.34% ethanol 7 g/kg bodyweight for 3 weeks. Controls were pair-fed on a diet with 30% protein but the same amount of Fe. Rats in a third group were bled, 5 ml for 4 days. All were killed 20, 50, 90 or 120 min after they were given human haemoglobin (HHb) 500 mg/kg bodyweight.
