Absorption of immunoglobulins from the intestine of newborn piglets

, : Absorption of immunoglobulins from the intestine of newborn piglets. Archiva Veterinaria, Roumania 9(Fasc. 1/2): 35-47

Newborn piglets were fed 6 ml of normal porcine gamma globulin, containing 10.5 g/100 ml of total protein, 87-90% IgG, IgM, and IgA, 8% beta globulins and 2-3% alpha globulins, then fed for 30 hrs with fried cows' milk. Immunoelectrophoresis and gel-electrophoresis showed that the highest blood conc. of immunoglobulins was reached 12 hrs later. Colostrum, given after piglets were fed only cows' milk for 30 hrs, was not absorbed, and the piglets remained hypo- or aglobulinaemic.
