Absorption of iron in patients with cirrhosis. (Preliminary note.)

, : Absorption of iron in patients with cirrhosis. (Preliminary note.). Revista Clinica Espanola 125(4): 295-300

59Fe was given by mouth to 15 patients with cirrhosis and to 15 healthy adults. Mean absorption of Fe was 38.3 and 23%, respectively, the difference being significant. There was no difference in absorption between patients with and without a history of alcoholism. Fe absorption was greater in 3 patients with sideropenia than in 4 without. Patients with depleted Fe deposits in the liver absorbed more Fe, 48.3%, than those with moderate, 26%, or large deposits, 25%.
