Absorption of iron in protein-calorie deficient rats and immediate effects of re-feeding an adequate protein diet

, : Absorption of iron in protein-calorie deficient rats and immediate effects of re-feeding an adequate protein diet. American Journal of Digestive Diseases 17(11): 959-968

Sprague-Dawley rats of bodyweight 110 to 130 g were fed to appetite on a synthetic diet containing 0.5% lactalbumin as the sole source of protein. After 6 weeks the rats continued on the low-protein diet or were given a diet with 18% lactalbumin for 1, 3 or 5 days and then after overnight deprivation of food they were given a diet based on wheat containing 20 mu g 59Fe. For another week 1 group on the diet with 18% protein was switched to the low-protein diet.
