Of 35 volunteers who did not have haematological disorders 19 were given a meal of 200 ml orange juice, 2 scrambled eggs, 2 slices of bread and black coffee which contained between 2 and 4 mg Fe and 16 were given a meal of black beans, 2 to 4 maize tortillas and black coffee which contained about 3 mg Fe. All were given 3 mu Ci 59Fe in the orange juice or coffee. Radioactivity was estimated 15 days later in a whole-body counter.
