Female rats weighing about 100 g in individual metabolism cages were fed on Purina chow (controls) or on a diet low in folacin for 20 days; the third group were given 1 mg folic acid (PGA) by subcutaneous injection 3 h before the experiment. Livers were obtained from 2 rats given at 48-h intervals 3 injections of 200 mu Ci PGA-3H and killed 3 days after the last; folacin was estimated with Lactobacillus casei and its fractions by column chromatography, and its specific activity was calculated.
