The absorption of long-chain fatty acids was studied in vivo by attaching a suction cup to the rumen wall of a cow with a large rumen fistula. Solutions of oleic acid were introduced into the cup in situ and were recovered after 30 to 60 min and analysed to estimate the loss of oleic acid through the wall; creatinine was included in the solution as a check on dilution since the rumen wall is impermeable to it.
