Absorption, concentration and metabolism of 85strontium in the decapod crustacean Carcinus maenas

, : Absorption, concentration and metabolism of 85strontium in the decapod crustacean Carcinus maenas. Marine Biology 12(2): 154-158

Crabs (Carcinus maenas) were kept in water contaminated with 85Sr. Before estimations were made they were washed in water without 85Sr for 5 min. The rate of uptake of 85Sr by the whole body was not affected by sex but was inversely proportional to the size of the crab at stage C4 of the intermoult cycle. The gills and haemolymph took up little 85Sr during the intermoult cycle. The hepatopancreas stored 85Sr during the last stages of the cycle but most 85Sr was taken up by the exoskeleton.
