The importance of intensive tillage and irrigation for the acceleration of breakdown of insecticides and defoliators through microbial action is emphasised. Among examples referred to is the use of gamma BHC (lindane) applied at the excessive rate of up to 3 kg/ha in intensive growing of vegetables at Erfurt in East Germany.
