Acceleration of the growth of tetrathyridial populations of Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda : Cyclophyllidea) by splenectomy

, : Acceleration of the growth of tetrathyridial populations of Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda : Cyclophyllidea) by splenectomy. International Journal for Parasitology 4(2): 165-168

First generation LDF1 hybrid mice were splenectomized one week before being given 200 to 300 Mesocestoides corti tetrathyridia by intraperitoneal injection. Control mice were also infected. All the animals were killed 50 days after infection. In splenectomized male and female mice, the total volume of parasites was found to be 9 and 12% greater, respectively, than in control mice. In a 2nd experiment, sham-operated mice were also infected. There was practically no difference between the mean volumes of worms from control and sham-operated animals but those from splenectomized animals exceeded those from controls by about 40% in males and 35% in females, the differences being statistically significant. Examination of the tetrathyridia revealed that individuals were smaller in splenectomized animals and there was an increase in 2-suckered and acephalic forms indicating an increase in asexual multiplication.
