Acceptance and sustenance value of naturally occurring sugars fed to newly emerged adult workers of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.)

, : Acceptance and sustenance value of naturally occurring sugars fed to newly emerged adult workers of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.). Journal of Experimental Zoology 187(2): 277-285

Each of 13 sugars was made up into 0.125, 0.5 and 2-M solutions in water and in 0.5-M sucrose. The syrups were tested by feeding each one to a group of 100 bees, whose survival, water consumption and sugar consumption were measured. Sucrose was the most acceptable and the most sustaining; when 0.5 M sucrose was supplied separately, it was preferred by the bees, which were not harmed by the presence of small quantities of other sugars.
