Chile saltpetre was put into mangers in place of common salt, and 43 cattle died suddenly. Symptoms included dyspnoea, anoxia, locomotor ataxia, convulsions and death in 30 minutes to 2 hours. P.M. examination revealed asphyxia, dark blood, chocolate coloured in some cases, and congestion of stomachs with petechiae or diffuse suffusion of serous surfaces.
