Accumulation of carnitine by bovine spermatozoa during maturation in the epididymis

, : Accumulation of carnitine by bovine spermatozoa during maturation in the epididymis. Journal of Biological Chemistry 248(23): 8227-8232

The free carnitine content of spermatozoa taken from the distal caput, midpiece and proximal and distal cauda was measured; the av. values were 0.07, 0.28, 0.49 and 1.0 mu mole/109 spermatozoa resp. Carnitine was not detected in testicular spermatozoa. These and other results suggest a previously unknown role for the mammalian epididymis as a site for carnitine accumulation by spermatozoa.
