In a two-year experiment on maize previously grown in monoculture for four years, annual application of dung alone or of dung + NPK increased the rate and intensity of accumulation of dry matter. The daily rate of N accumulation was maximal ten days before panicle formation, of K during panicle formation and of P after it. Nutrient uptake was greatest at the beginning of growth, and at this time P uptake was greater than K and N uptake.
