Accumulation of organic matter under grassland and its effects on grassland and on arable crops

, : Accumulation of organic matter under grassland and its effects on grassland and on arable crops. Agricultural Research Reports Verslagen van Landbouwkundige Onderzoekingen (806): 24

In grassland trials throughout the Netherlands on soils initially low in organic matter the latter began to accumulate soon after sowing and this usually continued over a long period until the equilibrium of permanent grassland was reached. The rate of accumulation was asymptotic. Yields of arable crops and of grassland of low clover content increased with increasing soil organic matter. The effect was almost entirely due to increased N supply from the soil.
