Accuracy of palpation in the diagnosis of ovarian function in the cow

, : Accuracy of palpation in the diagnosis of ovarian function in the cow. Veterinary Record 96(10): 218-220

The genital tracts of 85 cows slaughtered 24 h after rectal examination, and of 95 cows slaughtered 48 h after, were dissected. The estimate of ovarian contents made at rectal examination proved correct in 83% of ovaries but in only 67% of cows. Half the wrong diagnoses were due to failure to diagnose the presence of follicles or small cysts in ovaries otherwise empty. Corpora lutea were diagnosed accurately in 89% of the ovaries containing them.
