Of 60 recommended varieties, 27 have been bred locally; 58 new varieties of legumes and grasses are undergoing state varietal testing. At the Chernigov Agricultural Experimental Station the red-clover varieties Nosovka 5 and Nosovka 4 have been bred using heterosis, while at the All-Union Breeding and Genetics Institute the lucerne variety Zarya was obtained from open cross pollination of Zaikevicha odesskaya with a pollen mixture.
