Digestive modifications related to intermittent starvation in the rat

, : Digestive modifications related to intermittent starvation in the rat. Comptes Rendus des Seances de la Societe de Biologie 166(11): 1552-1556

Female rats from the age of 2 or 6 months and weight 180 plus or minus 7 or 293 plus or minus 10 g had no feed on 3 days a week for 3 or 5 months, respectively. The young rats ceased to grow and in the first 6 weeks showed a mean loss of weight by 6%, but subsequently they ate more in 4 days a week than the freely fed controls and began to grow again. The adult rats soon stabilised in weight at about 10% less than the controls.
