Dimethylsulfoxide increases the lethality of CCl4 in rats but decreases its hepatotoxicity

, : Dimethylsulfoxide increases the lethality of CCl4 in rats but decreases its hepatotoxicity. Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology 27(1): 206-209

I/p administration of CCl4 in the dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) to rats increased the lethality more than 20 times over that of CCl4 alone. In contrast to its effects on lethality, however, DMSO reduced the effectiveness of CCl4 in prolonging hexobarbital sleeping time, in promoting the accumulation of hepatic triglycerides and in altering the sulphobromophalein clearance mechanism. Thus, while the lethal potency of CCl4 is increased by DMSO, its hepatotoxic potency is reduced.
