Effect of dietary fat and cholesterol on circulating lipids and aortic ultrastructure of squirrel monkeys

, : Effect of dietary fat and cholesterol on circulating lipids and aortic ultrastructure of squirrel monkeys. Experimental and Molecular Pathology 15(3): 281-303

Young adult male squirrel monkeys received semipurified diets containing maize oil or coconut oil to provide 22% of total energy, with or without 30 mg/100 kcal diet of cholesterol for 6 months. Average weight gains were somewhat higher in the cholesterol-fed groups. Cholesterol, phospholipids and, transiently, triglycerides of serum were elevated in the monkeys receiving both cholesterol and coconut oil. Serum cholesterol was slightly increased in the group fed on cholesterol and maize oil. The extent and number of aortic atherosclerotic lesions were greater in monkeys given the saturated fat than in those fed on maize oil; cholesterol given at this moderate level appeared to have little effect on lesion development. The lesions were most severe in the proximal thoracic area. On observation with the election microscope, lesions were found to be of different cellular structure according to the type of fat given. No relation was found between the degree of atherosclerosis and glucose tolerance or serum insulin concentration, and there was no fatty infiltration of liver.
