Effect of plow depth and fertilizer rate on yields of corn, barley, soybeans and alfalfa and on soil tests

, : Effect of plow depth and fertilizer rate on yields of corn, barley, soybeans and alfalfa and on soil tests. Research Report, Agricultural Experiment Station, Michigan State University (241): 6

An experiment was begun in 1956 to study the effects of ploughing depth on yields of a maize/maize/soyabean/barley/lucerne rotation when minimum tillage was used. Results did not justify ploughing deeper than 4-8 in. Ploughing to 12 in gave a more uniform distribution of P and K in the top 16 in of soil. Maize prop roots absorbed more nutrients with a 4-in ploughing depth and hence yields were higher than with the 12-in depth, but similar results were not obtained in the other crops.
