Effect on the offspring of repeated caffeine administration to pregnant rats

, : Effect on the offspring of repeated caffeine administration to pregnant rats. Journal of Reproduction and Fertility 34(3): 495-499

Female rats were given 4, 8 or 16 mg caffeine/day for 20 days during pregnancy, equivalent to 10, 20 and 40 cups of coffee daily for women. There was a 20% and a 40% decrease in litter size in groups given 4 mg and 20 or 40 mg, respectively. Similarly the mean number of resorptions was twice as great in the first group and quadrupled in the second and third groups. Decrease in weight of the foetus seemed to be dose-related. Placentae showed no gross or histological change.
