Experimental poisoning with bitter vetch (Ervum ervilia)

, : Experimental poisoning with bitter vetch (Ervum ervilia). Revista de Nutricion Animal 12(3): 143-162

Water-soluble crystals were isolated from the seeds of vetch (Ervum ervilia) by the method of Dasler (Science, USA (1954) 120, 307) devised for other toxic legume seeds. Solutions of the crystals were injected into rabbits, mice and chickens. In mice, the LD50 by the intraperitoneal route was 9.5 to 10 mg/100 g bodyweight. In chickens it was 35 to 40 mg/100 g bodyweight intraperitoneally and 75 mg/100 g bodyweight intramuscularly.
