In 1971 in Japan there were 1.85 million dairy cows and 1.8 million beef cattle v 421,000 and 2.6 million respectively in 1955. In 1970, lactation yield averaged 3,800 kg. milk at 3.40 per cent. and 129 kg. fat. Length of calving interval averaged 15 month, body weight 515 kg. and herd size 7.5. AI began in 1928, and at present 98.6 per cent. of dairy cows and 94 per cent. of beef cows are inseminated.
