Lactating cows and goats were prepared with carotid and mammary vein loops for continuous blood sampling and mammary blood flow measurements. A nylon catheter was inserted in the loops and blood pumped out (0.55 ml/min) by a peristaltic pump, clotting being prevented by introduction of heparin at catheter tip and into extracted blood. A Technicon sampler and autoanalyser analysed samples for glucose and urea N.
