Influence of pre-laying dietary calcium upon tibial 45Ca uptake in 20-week-old pullets

, : Influence of pre-laying dietary calcium upon tibial 45Ca uptake in 20-week-old pullets. Poultry Science 51(3): 1058-1059

At 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age, 20 pullets were changed from a diet with 1.3% Ca to one containing 0.65 or 2.6% Ca. At 19 weeks of age, half of those pullets were changed to a diet with 2.0% Ca. Ten pullets each were given the diets with 0.65 and 2.6% Ca from hatching to the end of the experiment. At 20 weeks of age, all the pullets were given 45Ca into the crop and killed 24 h later. Changing the diet had no significant effect on 45Ca deposition in the tibia whenever the change was made as long as all the groups compared were given the same final diets. The pullets given the diet with 0.65% Ca deposited more 45Ca in the tibia than those given the diet with 2.6 or 2.0% Ca. Adaptation to Ca given before laying was not the result of altered absorption and subsequent deposition of Ca in the skeletal pool.
