Analyses of progenies from crosses of 13 varieties showed that grain colour is controlled by the interaction of a structural gene system (SGS) and a regulatory gene system (RGS) involving repression and derepression. Dominant SGS genes responsible for the synthesis of yellow (Y), red (R) and dark (Dk) pigments were revealed, whose function depended on the allelic state of the complementary activator and deactivator regulatory genes.
