Performance of Loblolly and Slash Pine nursery selections

, : Performance of Loblolly and Slash Pine nursery selections. Forest Science 18(4): 308-313

One-year-old seedlings of Pinus elliottii and P. taeda were selected in a S. Carolina nursery during 1954-57 on the basis of exceptional height ( more than or equal to 8 in), the intensity of selection being 1: 10 000. The selected seedlings (a) were > 100% taller than controls (b). Plot trials of (a) and (b) were made and evaluated after 10 years: (a) remained significantly taller, and had a mean volume 80% greater than that of (b) in P. elliottii and >3 times that of (b) in P. taeda.
