Permeability of seed coats to water as related to drying conditions and metabolism of phenolics

, : Permeability of seed coats to water as related to drying conditions and metabolism of phenolics. Plant Physiology 54(6): 817-820

When seeds of Pisum elatius were dried in the absence of O2 the seed coat, which is normally impermeable, was totally permeable to water. Structural differences between permeable and impermeable seed coats were observed. In the genus Pisum, species with impermeable seed coats had a high content of phenolics and high catechol oxidase activity. These differences were not found in cotyledons.
