Persistence of Dasanit in corn silage and effects of feeding dairy cows the treated silage

, : Persistence of Dasanit in corn silage and effects of feeding dairy cows the treated silage. Journal of Dairy Science 56(6): 775-782

Maize was sprayed with Dasanit, a compound with insecticidal and nematicidal activity, at (i) 0.56, (ii) 1.12 and (iii) 2.24 kg active ingredient/ha, then field-chopped and ensiled in tower silos 1 day post-treatment without being subjected to rain. After 48 days each silage was fed ad lib. to groups of 4 Jersey cows for 6 wk. Residues of Dasanit and its analogues on the maize and silage when treated, after 14 and 28 days, and during the 1st and 5th weeks of feeding were, respectively, for each treatment (ppm): (i) 8.1, 5.9, 4.9, 5.8, 5.6; (ii) 12.5, 10.0, 9.7, 11.0, 8.9; (iii) 25.9, 20.9, 19.5, 24.5, 17.7. A cow on treatment (iii) died on the 7th day of feeding, after consuming a total of 2.75 mg Dasanit/kg body wt. Groups (ii) and (iii) were, therefore, fed treated silages only during wk 1 and 5. Silage intake averaged 95, 47 and 32% of pre-treatment intakes and concentrate refusals were 1, 27 and 42% for groups (i), (ii) and (iii) respectively during the 1st wk of feeding. Body wt. declined and blood cholinesterase activity was severely depressed by Dasanit feeding. Milk yields of cows on (i) declined by 25% after 6 wk of feeding but (ii) and (iii) fell by 17 and 38% after only 1 wk. Milk fat synthesis was not consistently affected. Recovery from treatment effects was slow. Total Dasanit residues in milk, urine and faeces were less than or equal to 0.027, 0.036 and 0.020 ppm. All residues were eliminated within 1 wk of the withdrawal of treated silage.
