Photosynthesis by thin leaf slices in solution. 2. Osmotic stress and its effect on photosynthesis

, : Photosynthesis by thin leaf slices in solution. 2. Osmotic stress and its effect on photosynthesis. Australian Journal of Biological Sciences 26(1): 25-33

The effects of osmotic stresses on photosynthetic 14CO2 fixation by cotton leaf slices were investigated. Using mannitol and NaCl as examples of osmotica which entered leaf cells fairly slowly, and ethylene glycol as a rapidly-permeating osmoticum, the relative importance of different components of tissue water status in inhibiting C fixation was studied. A 5-min treatment in a -17 bar solution of mannitol inhibited 14CO2 fixation by 25%, while significant effects were observed at -4 bars.
