Physiological evaluation of urea concentrates in feeds for ruminants. 1. Metabolism of urea and ammonia in heifers from 4 to 10 months old

, : Physiological evaluation of urea concentrates in feeds for ruminants. 1. Metabolism of urea and ammonia in heifers from 4 to 10 months old. Polskie Archiwum Weterynaryjne 15(4): 789-799

1. Three heifers were fed from 4 to 10 months of age on a diet with a pelleted concentrate, of 31.6% urea, 66.0% lucerne meal, 2.0% CaHPO4 and 0.4% Na2S2O5, as the main source of N; urea supplied 50% of total N of the diet. Control heifers got soya bean oilmeal instead of urea. There was no significant difference between the groups in NH3, volatile fatty acids or pH of rumen contents, or in urea, amino N or glucose in blood plasma; liveweight gains were similar, about 940 g daily.
