Role of subclinical or chronic swine fever in reproductive disorders in pig farms

, : Role of subclinical or chronic swine fever in reproductive disorders in pig farms. Journees de la Recherche Porcine en France: 5-9

Of 14 pig farms with reproductive disorders in three departments of France 12 were positive for swine fever virus: eight were serologically positive, and seven yielded (from tonsils) swine fever virus in PK-15 tissue culture cells; in six farms the isolates differed serologically from standard strains; they were difficult to isolate, requiring up to 7-8 blind passages, multiplying very slowly and inducing only weak fluorescence, and of low pathogenic and immunogenic potency in the piglet (though pathogenic for the pig foetus); in the rabbit they were not capable of inducing an immune response of the type observed with lapinized 'Chinese' strains. On two farms yielding serological variants the pigs had little or no neutralizing activity against a standard virulent strain. It is suggested that the practice of serovaccination could give rise to these variant strains.
