, : Sleeping sickness. Introduction, progress and spread of the disease in Mozambique. Anais da Escola Nacional de Saude Publica e de Medicina Tropical 5(3/4): 325-366

A historical account is given of the distribution, spread, ecology and transmission of sleeping sickness (caused by Trypanosoma rhodesiense and T. gambiense) in Africa, and the situation is reviewed in the light of present knowledge. The characteristics and relationship of the three polymorphic trypanosomes of the group of T. brucei, T. brucei, T. gambiense and T. rhodesiense, and their associated vector species of Glossina are discussed.
