This review article summarizes recent knowledge and current problems on the subacute spongiform encephalopathies (scrapie, transmissible mink encephalopathy, kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease), subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, old-dog encephalitis, progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy, rabies, and multiple sclerosis.
