Studies on the padi mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) III. Effect of urea on mycelial development and upon yield in oil palm pericarp waste

, : Studies on the padi mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) III. Effect of urea on mycelial development and upon yield in oil palm pericarp waste. Malaysian Agricultural Research 3(1): 7-11

Growth of mycelium of V. volvacea on sterilized oil palm pericarp waste with various additives was studied in vitro. The addition of 1 g urea and 10 g rice bran to 200 g of waste gave the fastest and most abundant growth. As the urea/rice bran ratio increased, the relative abundance of mycelium decreased. Superphosphate was inhibitory, probably because of its extreme acidity (pH 3.0) in solution.
