V. volvacea was successfully grown on fresh waste. Old waste subjected to lengthy decomposition and leaching was unsuitable. Fresh material composted for 5 days before spawning gave the highest mean yield of about 1.54 kg/100 kg of waste, compared with material composted for 1, 10 and 15 days. Rice straw was clearly superior, giving a mean yield of 4.67 kg/100 kg of straw.
