Histological and radiological examinations of cases of equine navicular disease revealed the following changes: widening of the tendinous surface of the navicular bone in a distal direction, shortening of the phalangeal-sesamoidean ligament with infiltration of connective tissue elements, and osteophyte formation at the insertions of the phalangeal-sesamoidean ligament and the deep flexor tendon on the posterior surface of the third phalanx.
